Married Couple Income & Resource Limits to Qualify for Medicaid
In 2017, to qualify for Medicaid, and have Medicaid pay for the spouse’s nursing home care instead of using up your life savings, the married couple must have limited income. But there are different rules for each spouse. Here is the rule for income for married couples:
- Married Couple Monthly Income Limits
Spouse living in the nursing home monthly income limit:
$2,205.00
No income limit for Spouse living in the marital home.
Medicaid does NOT count income of spouse living in the marital home. Here’s what that means. Let’s assume that the income of the spouse living in the nursing home is equal to or below the Medicaid limit of $2,205. The monthly income of the spouse living in the marital home can be $1,000, 3,000 or $10,000 per month—it doesn’t matter. Medicaid doesn’t count the income of the spouse living in the marital home when determining if the Spouse living in the nursing home qualifies for Medicaid.
- Married Couple Resource Limits
Both spouses have resource limits to qualify for Medicaid. Those limits are the following:
Spouse living in the nursing home resource limit:
$8,000
Spouse living in the marital home resource limit:
$120,900
Here’s what the resource limits for a married couple mean. Spouse living in the nursing home is allowed to keep $8,000 in resources, and Spouse living in the marital home can keep maximum resources of $120,900. Therefore, a married couple can have combined resources of $128,900 and still qualify for Medicaid to pay for nursing home care.
