How Long it Takes to Complete Estate & Probate Administration
If everything runs smoothly, you can complete the process in a little over a year’s time. One year is the bench mark because one of the many things that has to be done when administering an estate is to protect it from lawsuits. The Pennsylvania rule states that if someone has a claim to make against an estate, it must be made within one year of the estate being advertised in a local newspaper and legal journal. If the claim is not made within that one year time period, then it can’t be made and the estate is protected. Closing the estate before the one year bench mark runs the risk of a claim being made, but not having money in the estate to pay it because the beneficiaries already spent what you gave them. And now you’re on the hook as the executor.
